Kwila is a well-known hardwood decking timber used in New Zealand. It has a golden/brown colour and can vary greatly from board to board. Most Kwila has small yellow mineral deposits, making it even more distinctive. The grain is interlocked with straight elements. The colour deepens as Kwila ages. It is non-siliceous, sometimes lustrous. Timber ‘bleeds’ when wet producing a dark brown stain.
